Artists / ZIKFA (FRANCE)

ZikFa In France, multicultural influences backfire deep into the local music. Four young female singers mix African tonalities with Celtic candour, medieval forms and taste for bizarre instruments. ZikFa perform barefooted dressed in black, and "sound like Dead Can Dance music performed by Esperanca Trio..."

ZikFa is an acronym for feminine musical vision: muZIK + FeminA. The band was founded in 1997, searching for both visual and musical contrasts. Instead of bass they use a monster brass horn called soubassophone, along with diatonic button sqeezebox and percussion occasionally substituted, Gypsy style, by rap vocals. Are they witches or gentle female spirits? This timeless issue is discussed in parallel band project called Divagabondes. What music, Irish or Turkish? This topic is linked to another related band, Irishtambul.

Monique played baroque music, until she saw the magnificent soubassophone in music instruments shop and fell in love with it. Besides ZikFa, she plays in Salade of Noises and Divagabondes. Nadine used to sing in choir, played children puppet theatre. Also, she is a choirmaster in Divagabondes and sings with Irishtambul. Nadege is the ethno roots force. Since 14 she plays diatonic accordion, for 4 years she practised with 80 year old fiddler. Her side projects: Quasimodaux. Bastringue, Mandarine. Severine plays flute piccolo since 9 years, as a child prodigy she was winning flute and chamber music prizes on daily basis.

Zikfa stage act was developed by actor and playwright Marc Fremond. Their music shifts between medieval polyphony, African acapella singing and free form improvisations.
